Laying the Foundation for Enterprise AI at X-energy

At A Glance:

Capstone Sponsor: X-energy
Faculty Advisor: Dr. Dan Simundza
Capstone Team Members: Scott Sculley, Ryan Mason, Grace Lowry, Advay Prakash, Angelica Wilhelm
Solution Summary: Built an enterprise AI roadmap and proof-of-concept models to launch X-energy’s first dedicated AI department, helping the company use AI as a force multiplier for faster time to market.

The Challenge

X-energy — an advanced small modular reactor (SMR) company — needed to turn widespread employee interest in AI into a coordinated, strategic capability. While individual teams were experimenting with AI tools, there was no structured plan to identify high-value use cases, test feasibility, or guide company-wide adoption. To maintain its reputation for innovation and meet aggressive deployment goals, X-energy needed a clear AI foundation and actionable first steps.

The Solution

The student team kicked off the project with a company-wide AI Lunch & Learn, capturing ideas from employees on how AI could automate repetitive tasks and boost productivity. They organized submissions, evaluated feasibility, and identified 36 potential use cases across departments — including audit, quality assurance, regulatory, and corrective actions.

They built and tested five proof-of-concept models on secure internal systems, estimating up to 79% time savings for repetitive tasks — freeing employees to focus on higher-value work. Their deliverables included a crawl–walk–run plan for scaling adoption, a strategy for standardizing data formats across departments, and an AI education program with recurring sessions to build skills like prompt engineering. Together, these actions laid the groundwork for X-energy’s new, fully staffed AI department.

The Impact

With this structured roadmap and tested use cases, X-energy is positioned to integrate AI as a force multiplier — reducing manual workloads, speeding up processes, and shortening time to market for its SMR projects. The team’s early work saved the company’s new AI director months of startup work, giving X-energy a head start in scaling AI capabilities as it grows.
